YOUTH BOWLING
History
Our youth program was initiated in the summer of 2014 with only two junior aged recruits. This changed rapidly and by 2017 we exceeded a dozen members and added a yearly “Introduction to bowling” morning for the local high school.
The program has seen excellent development by our young people, in our second year one of our bowlers was on the Provincial podium with a bronze medal and after two years another bronze and a silver were brought home. In 2017 one of our junior boys competed in the nationals in Nova Scotia and won the bronze as well as being awarded the Junior Sportsmanship Award. In the following years our youth were frequently having success in local championship events. In 2019 one of our younger juniors placed fourth in the Provincials and a month later our youth members won two gold, a silver and a bronze at the Nationals held in Victoria.
Parents are encouraged to attend our development sessions and we have discovered that this often sparks interest in bowling for the parents and have provided introductory training for those who embrace the idea as a family.
Our Sidney program provides bowls and other equipment, without charge to each athlete, for as long as they remain with our program.
Training and Coaching
The program maintains a pool of certified, experienced and knowledgeable coaches that are selected and screened for their ability to work with an age group that ranges from ten to twenty-four years of age. All coaches for the youth program must have a Criminal Record Check for the Vulnerable Sector. In addition, each coach must have completed the Respect in Sport Program and obtained an Activity Leader Certificate. Our “coaching pool” is flexible and can expand or shrink depending on numbers.
While teaching the sport we emphasis safety, the value of true sportsmanship, the value of a good attitude and the enormous value of volunteering in and outside of our club. We accept that every individual may not be competitive and ensure the same level of attention and respect for every member.
We keep a strong element of fun and include a variety of fun games that also build the skills of the game.
As in any sport the rules of the game are an important factor in fair play and understanding the intricacies of the game. Our youth are well versed in the rules of the game and over a relatively short period of time attain understanding and retain these rules to a high level.
2020, the Covid 19 impact
Covid 19 has, as in other sports, put restrictions that have created some difficulty for the program. We have continued through this past season with a greatly modified program that has allowed our present members to continue within the COVID-19 rules. However, for now, we cannot take on new bowlers.
What we can do is if anyone between the ages of ten and twenty-four have an interest or a curiosity about the game is to take your name and a phone number. We maintain a list of those interested and if you wish we will provide a pamphlet with more detail.
